Cultivating Company Character

Harvard Business Review conducted a study in which they found only 12% of people believe what a company’s leaders have to say about themselves in regards to culture and leadership. The inverse was that over 70% of people believe what the internal team of employees have to say.

So, when you’re trying to share your company’s sense of culture and leadership with someone who’s on the market, one of the most effective ways you can do that is simply to share the stories of people who are already on your team. Those voices hold the weight of experience and their value cannot be understated.

There are also a lot of other simple things that you can do to convey that you and your company are worthwhile.

For instance, if you tell someone you’re going to call them at 10… call them right at 10. Do what you say you’re going to do. It is the small acts of calling on time, keeping the conversation on track, and following through with your word that builds trust and demonstrates a culture of accountability and respect.

Another easy way to demonstrate your company’s character is to show real interest in the conversation and actively listen to what is being shared. Don’t have your laptop open in front of you or be texting on the side - that subtle disinterest is never appreciated and always noticed.

It might seem shocking, but only 10% of people in the industry represent that they can do that (call when they say they’re going to call, and be 100% present right then and there in the conversation).

Sadly, it’s the norm to do otherwise. Not because people want to demonstrate a poor sense of company culture and leadership by being late and/or distracted. It is simply the overwhelm of running a business that prevents people from being truly prepared and present. Even the best intentions can get bogged down by the day to day chaos.

Our job is to help you clear the noise and get out of overwhelm, so that as a baseline, you are able to call on time and be 100% laser-focused on the conversation in front of you. With those two things in place, it becomes easy for the highest intentions of the company to shine through in even the smallest of interactions.
